Informed as much by the cutting-edge electronica of Jlin, Arca, Burial and Autechre as they are classic synth pop, art rock and modern composition Joan Banoit is the stage name of songwriter, composer, arranger and ex St Mary’s choirboy Julian Bright.
Bursting onto the scene several years ago with a series of Marrickville warehouse gigs, they signed to new Sydney label Lazy Thinking in 2017 and release their debut single and video ‘Bet Me’ in June 2018, with an album to follow.
The world needs a superhero
Moniker is no hero!
Moniker is the alternative
Moniker is a new project and brainchild of illuminati from Australia’s underground avant rock and pop scenes.
Born through collaboration in the studio, Moniker teams up with artists whose previous work is found on tracks by figures as diverse as Passenger, Katalyst, Sarah McLeod, Jack Ladder, Tina Harrod, Joan Banoit and even ARIA nominated jazz.
Artefact is producer/composer Jim Flanagan. His debut album ‘No Safe Place’ was produced by award winning composer/producer/musician Stu Hunter and released in 2014. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote at the time that ‘…. if a magic carpet made a sound when it flew it might be this.’
The animated music videos for singles ‘What I Want’ and ‘Brunfelsia’ were nominated for over 20 international awards, winning six and were featured in competition at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival's ‘Festival Winners in Animation - Special Animation Day’ alongside Disney’s ‘Inside’ Out’ and ‘Song of The Sea.’
Artefact has produced Joan Banoit’s upcoming album ‘Clerical’.
