Informed as much by the cutting-edge electronica of Jlin, Arca, Burial and Autechre as they are classic synth pop, art rock and modern composition Joan Banoit is the stage name of songwriter, composer, arranger and ex St Mary’s choirboy Julian Bright.
Bursting onto the scene several years ago with a series of Marrickville warehouse gigs, they signed to new Sydney label Lazy Thinking in 2017 and released their debut single and video ‘Bet Me’ in June 2018. Album ‘Clerical’ is out now.
THE BRAZILIAN GENTLEMAN
The Brazilian Gentleman’ is the immensely exciting new project from Christian McKenna and Alap Momin. Far more familiar as members of several critically acclaimed experimental bands (including Third Culture Kings, dälek , End Christian, and Hex Inverter) both have recently veered off into extraordinary and completely new sonic directions, with their last two albums together (‘End Christian’s ‘Bach Part 2’ and 'Energy & Strength') producing what ‘The Wire Magazine’ described as ‘..trap touched, soul kissed doom pop’ that’s ’….startling in its accessibility.’
Featuring guest appearances from Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick and Chris Connolly (Desertshore, Sun Kil Moon), these records only hinted at the astounding stylistic innovations of the debut album of their new project ‘The Brazilian Gentleman.’ Applying the kind of meticulous studio craft and utterly modern, totally distinctive contemporary music familiar to listeners of Daniel Lopatin’s Oneohtrix Point Never and Arca, their debut album somehow also manages to retain the accessibility of the best art pop.
The Brazilian Gentleman’s self titled debut isn’t much like anything else currently on the market.

Born through collaboration in the studio, Moniker teams up with artists whose previous work is found on tracks by figures as diverse as Passenger, Katalyst, Sarah McLeod, Jack Ladder, Tina Harrod, Joan Banoit and even ARIA nominated jazz.
Artefact is producer/composer Jim Flanagan. His debut album ‘No Safe Place’ was produced by award winning composer/producer/musician Stu Hunter and released in 2014. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote at the time that ‘…. if a magic carpet made a sound when it flew it might be this.’
